10 Things I Learned in 2024

1. THIS TOO SHALL PASS

In 2024, I faced a period of intense criticism that tested my confidence. While scrutiny comes with my position, at times the constant critiques and questions took their toll, making me question my decisions. However, I learned a valuable lesson: the intensity of criticism is often temporary. Just as quickly as it arises, it tends to fade away as people move on to other topics and concerns. This realization helped me to weather the storm and maintain my self-worth, knowing that this too shall pass.

2. SERVANT LEADERSHIP

In 2024, we embarked on a journey to cultivate a leadership team that truly embodies the principles of servant leadership. We've emphasized the importance of putting the needs of our employees first, fostering open and honest communication, and empowering individuals to reach their full potential. This leadership style focus has not only boosted morale and increased employee engagement, but also significantly improved collaboration and overall team performance.

3. IT TAKES A VILLAGE

In 2024, I learned that that nothing gets accomplished without a team. Early in my career, I tried to do everything by myself. Not only was this thinking misguided, it was selfish and egotistical. As the years go by, I have discovered that achieving significant goals - whether personal or professional - rarely happens in isolation. The support, guidance, and collaborative efforts of others are not just helpful, but absolutely essential for growth and success.

4. FAMILY MATTERS

In 2024, one of my New Year's resolutions was to prioritize spending quality time with my parents. This year, I made a conscious effort to schedule regular visits with both my mom and my dad. While I can still do better, I’ve learned that making time for loved ones is an investment that yields immeasurable returns and the simple act of being present with my parents, listening to their stories, and sharing my appreciation for what they have given me has brought a sense of fulfillment to my life.

5. BE THANKFUL FOR HEALTH

In 2024, I witnessed friends, family, and coworkers face unexpected health challenges. These experiences served as a stark reminder that life is short: you never know when you might never hear from someone again, and when a cherished moment may be your last. This realization has profoundly impacted me, as I have learned to appreciate the fragility of life and the importance of making moments matter with others.

6. 42 IS THE NEW 32

In 2024, I embraced the notion that aging gracefully is not about defying time, but about embracing a lifestyle that supports optimal health and well-being. While this is nothing new, I’ve been amazed by how consistent exercise, healthy eating, and prioritizing sleep has helped me stay in great shape at an age when many are falling apart. This commitment to self-care has not only improved my physical health but also enhanced my mental clarity, energy levels, and overall sense of well-being.

7. THERE’S MORE TO LIFE

In 2024, I made a conscious effort to expand my horizons. While I deeply love my community in Waterloo, I've come to realize that there's so much more to the world than what I experience in my daily routine. Often, we fall into the trap of narrow-mindedness, limiting our perspectives to our immediate surroundings. While I can sometimes be a homebody, I’ve sought out opportunities to explore new cultures, connect with people from diverse backgrounds, and broaden my understanding of the world.

8. MUSIC = MEDITATION

In 2024, music has become my morning ritual. Instead of starting my day with social media, emails, news headlines, or sports highlights, I've intentionally chosen music as my morning companion. I've found that immersing myself in music allows me to set a positive tone for the day and approach my work with greater focus and creativity. While I may look goofy on the treadmill getting hype to some EDM or old-school rap, music is an opportunity to escape the worries of the day and helps me start each day with a productive mindset.

9. NEVER SETTLE

In 2024, I embraced the "Never Settle" mantra as a guiding principle in all areas of my life. I'm applying this philosophy to my career, my relationships, and my personal goals. I'm constantly seeking opportunities for growth, challenging myself to step outside my comfort zone, and striving for excellence in all that I do. I've learned that anything is possible when you maintain unwavering focus on your goals. This journey of continuous improvement has been both challenging and rewarding, pushing me to discover my true potential.

10. SUFFERING BEFORE JOY

In 2024, I spent a lot of time thinking about the challenges I faced growing up. Life wasn't always easy, but it has undeniably shaped me into the person I am today. The struggles I've overcome have instilled in me a strong work ethic, a deep sense of resilience, and an "underdog mentality" that fuels my drive. I've learned that adversity, while painful, can be a powerful catalyst for growth and personal development. It has given me a chip on my shoulder, a healthy sense of determination to prove myself and achieve my goals.
